This is what Stadia’s death looked like

On January 18, 2023, Google officially shut down the one and only cloud gaming platform. Curious what Stadia’s death was actually like? Here is a quick look.

Within about 15-30 minutes after the 11:59 PM PT previously announced by Google, Stadia was unofficially closed to players. Active sessions were closed with the game appearing to freeze, lock, and then refuse to reopen with a simple message saying:

Error details are not provided

Instead of shutting down the platform as a whole, Google apparently dealt with the shutdown by shutting down games one by one.

Red Dead Redemption 2 streaming continued 20 minutes after Google’s original shutdown time. We were also able to keep playing games until 12:22am PT, at which point we were kicked out and unable to open any games on the platform, as shown below.

Many other Stadia players have documented the same experience on Twitter.

Google announced the closure of Stadia on September 29, 2022. All game purchases, expansion packs, and Stadia hardware purchases have been refunded to customers, and Google has also unlocked Bluetooth support on the Stadia Controller to allow customers to continue using the controllers with other platforms. There is no successor to Stadia, as interest turns to other companies to continue the cloud gaming vision.
