British actor Julian Sands has been identified as the hiker who went missing in the California mountains last week.

The 65-year-old, best known for his role in the 1985 Oscar-nominated film A Room with a View, has been missing in the Mount Baldy area since Friday, Jan. 13, according to authorities.

His wife, writer Evgenia Sitkovitz, reported him missing Friday night and is believed to be somewhere on the famous Baldy Bowl Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains. Mount Baldy is a 10,000-foot peak located northeast of Los Angeles, in the Angeles National Forest.

Sands is an avid hiker and mountaineer who once described his happiest moments as being “near the top of a mountain on a cold, glorious morning”.

Department spokeswoman Gloria Huerta told CNN that search and rescue crews were on the mountain looking for sand, but had to suspend the search due to severe weather and the threat of an avalanche.

Drones have been used to continue the search but rescuers are limited by other resources due to the weather.

The Independent realizes that Sands’ son Henry has joined the search, accompanied by an experienced climber. Sands shares two daughters, Imogen and Natalia, with his wife Sitkowitz. Henry is involved with his ex-wife, journalist, and editor Sarah Sands (née Harvey).

California has been hit by a series of violent winter storms that have caused significant flooding and snowfall in the drought-hit state.

The police department says that over the past four weeks it has launched 14 search and rescue missions in the Mount Baldy area alone, as two hikers died on the mountain.

“These rescue missions were for lost, stranded, and/or injured hikers. Unfortunately, over the past four weeks, two hikers have not survived after falling and injuring themselves,” the agency said on Facebook.

“Recent storms that have caused snow and ice conditions are not conducive to hikers, even those who feel they have a high level of experience.”

Sands, who lives in North Hollywood with Citkowitz, has appeared in more than 150 films and TV shows over the course of his career.

Born in Yorkshire, England, he moved to California in the 1980s to pursue a career in Hollywood, following the success of James Ivory’s A Room with a View, a 1985 romantic film based on the 1908 E.M. Forster novel.

Sands, who gained attention for his early performance in 1984’s The Killing Fields, was cast as George Emerson opposite Helena Bonham Carter’s Lucy Honeychurch. The film also starred Maggie Smith, Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, and Simon Callow in supporting roles.

A Room with a View was a box office hit, received critical praise upon release and was nominated for eight Academy Awards at the 59th Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Sands’ career after A Room with a View has been an eclectic one, featuring horror, indie, romance, and action comedy. He starred opposite Richard E. Grant and Laurie Singer in the supernatural horror film, reprising the role in the sequel Warlock: The Armageddon.

He played composer Franz Liszt in Impromptu in 1991, with Hugh Grant starring as Frederic Chopin and Judy Davis as Georges Sand.

Most recently, he appeared with James Bond stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in the Oscar-nominated English version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, in 2011.
