West Ham 0-0 Everton

“Bottom 4 bands all look hilarious,” says Tony Ratt on Twitter. “Maybe they were forced to witness Andy Murray’s gritty and determined performance this week.” We all need to be more of Andy, right?
Goal! Bournemouth 1-0 Forest (Anthony 27)
Bournemouth didn’t score…now they did! A clear shot from Jadon Anthony, it was set up by a thrilling run from new signing Dango Outtara.

Goal! Leicester 0-1 Brighton (Metoma 27)
An absolute stunner, it would seem.
Southampton 0-0 Villa
However, disallowed targets are pouring in. Che Adams from Southampton kicks the ball into the net with a sloppy shot, but it turns out to be offside, as does teammate Kyle Walker-Peters.
All four matches reached the quarter-finals without goals. It’s Liverpool and Chelsea again!
“Mary Waltz, Lampard,” says Jeff Sachs, in an oval. “For sure, Lampard should have been sacked a long time ago…and Moyes too.”
There are still no goals in the Premier League. Most of the running this afternoon was by Stevenage, who took a 2-0 lead over the normally slim Orient. Also off to a good start: Preston, leading 2-0 in Birmingham in the match that makes tournament history because the referee is a woman, Rebecca Welch.

Target not allowed! Bournemouth 0-0 Forest Forest’s Ryan Yeats headed home a free-kick, but it was ruled offside against team mate Willy Boly. “It’s the right decision,” says Chris Sutton on Sky. I seem to remember Boley doing the same thing when Forest lost 3-0 at Old Trafford just after Christmas.

And another! match report for you
Zach Neely says: “After a difficult start after Potter’s spell ended, Brighton still have the edge over Chelsea, and with a home win over Leicester today, they will have more points since he left than they did at Chelsea. Potter won their first three league games, while not Brighton won any of their first three games without him. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such sustained revenge as the Seagulls got during and after that 4-1 pasting.”

“Start Zuma,” says Chris in Corfu. “Is Moise looking for a dead cat bounce?” haha.
All four matches started. Not a goal between them yet.
I was wondering when we would hear from our Everton correspondent. And here it is! “Lampard will have the sack, if not tomorrow, then soon,” says Mary Waltz. “But unless there is a big plus in transfers, I don’t see my Everton side avoiding relegation with a different manager. Richarlison’s loss wasn’t just a loss of scoring goals, it was a loss of fighting, of never giving up.”
At the London Stadium, West Ham co-chairman David Gold, who died this month at the age of 86, is being honored. Mark Noble is on the field with members of the Gould family, and there’s a standing ovation.

So Liverpool reached the halfway point of the league season with 28 points. After finishing on the right side of 90 in three of the past four seasons, Liverpool cannot manage more than 86 this time around. Keep in mind that Chelsea have lost 31 points and played a game more, so the most they can get is 83.
Different staff, same result
Liverpool and Chelsea have drawn in their last 5 regular-time matches:

Aside from Dundee, we have mail from Indianapolis. Joe Pearson says: “I know this isn’t a fresh or original opinion, but why don’t Everton and West Ham change managers and be done with it? I’m sick of reading about Lampard and Moyes anxiously waiting to chop.” Ha. I wonder which club will get the best out of this deal.
e-mail! From our Scottish correspondent Simon McMahon. “Afternoon Tim, I hope you are well.” Not bad, thanks. “The fourth round of the Scottish Cup is here today, and I am at Tannadice to see two-time cup-winners Dundee United begin this season their quest for Scottish Cup glory against the University of Stirling. Like Andy Murray, United are not comfortable winning, so I would expect a tight competitive affair against a lower league team. Celtic beat Morton 5-0 in the early start and other fixtures worth watching include Arbroath v Motherwell, Hamilton v Ross County and the start of Perth’s tea time as they host St Johnstone Rangers”. Low league side! An early attempt to get a stylish change for the day.
Team news in brief
As for Everton, Frank Lampard is pretty much sticking with the losing side, making just one change – seeing Mina in place of Ben Godfrey. West Ham’s David Moyes goes for more changes, bringing in Kurt Zouma, Emerson and Said Benrahma and switching to what looks like a back three, which means no room for Tomas Soucek.
Leicester have good news from the treatment room as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is back in the starting line-up and James Maddison is fit enough to sit on the bench. Brendan Rodgers also remembers Dennis Bright, while Danny Welbeck returns to lead the Brighton line, making his debut in Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Heck.
For Villa, Alex Moreno makes his first start at left back. For Southampton, Mohamed Elyounoussi drops off the bench as Adam Armstrong comes on.
Interesting line-ups at the Vitality Stadium as Bournemouth make a series of changes and sign new signing Dango Outtara. He is, as you know, a striker from Burkina Faso. “I see your new striker, I show you your striker,” says Forest’s Steve Cooper, giving first start to Chris Wood, on loan from Newcastle. Wayne Hennessy replaces Dean Henderson in goal, and Willie Boley replaces Scott McKenna.

Preamble
Hello and welcome to Al Kabeer. No, not Arsenal v Man United – no manager’s fate hinges on it, while there are two heads on the field at the London Stadium this afternoon. West Ham v Everton has it all: a six-pointer relegation featuring two famous teams, both of whom have fallen on hard times, both led by well-known personalities, each a part of their opponents’ history.
West Ham is managed by David Moyes, who played so decently at Everton that he stayed there for 11 years. Everton is managed by Frank Lampard, who began his illustrious playing career (as Frank Lampard Jr.) by spending seven years at West Ham. Now both men boxed in: In the sack race, they’re neck and neck ahead of the rest. Just to add spice, Moyes’ return to Everton has been discussed, should Lampard get the piece.
In the form table, which covers each club’s last six matches, these two are pegged down by one point each. Everton have 99 problems, one being that they were particularly poor against relegation rivals, losing to Southampton last weekend (at home, after taking top spot), and even being beaten by Bournemouth just before the World Cup. So, in a game where you might support both teams to lose, West Ham find themselves the favorites. And they have a clever new signing – Danny Ings, who completed the orange and blue kit and certainly brought some goals with him.
The other matches at 3pm are expected to be almost tense. We have Bournemouth, 17, Forest Recreation (13); Leicester (14) – Brighton (7). And Southampton (20) – Villa (11). The bottom seven clubs are separated by just two points, almost as if huddled together for warmth, meaning any win is a big deal and two on the trot is big.
Forest managed two goals, edging out Southampton and Leicester, and should be able to add a third at Bournemouth. Southampton won three in a row, albeit in different competitions – against Palace in the FA Cup and Man City in the Carabao as well as that six-goal feat at Goodison. They will do very well if they can get into fourth place against Villa, who are shining on their own under Unai Emery.
Leicester, back in the doldrums after a run in November, may be secretly hoping to equalize with Brighton, who have won five of their last six away games on all balls and scored 18 goals in the process. Brighton sold another of their mainstays this week (Leandro Trossard, to Arsenal), stressing they are about the system, not the individual. Even the loss of Graham Potter didn’t seem to make much of a difference to them.
It’s all very tasty, in a gritty way. Don’t join me shortly after 2pm for team papers.
