Russian forces shelled Zaporizhia more than 160 times during the past day, launching a new offensive in the region.
On Saturday, the Russian military said its forces had led “offensive operations” in the area and claimed they had “taken more advantageous lines and positions”.
It comes as fighting intensified this week there after several months of a near-frozen front.
Oleksandr Starukh, the region’s governor, said Russian forces launched more than 160 artillery attacks overnight in 21 towns and cities, killing one woman and wounding two others.
He said: “The enemy is intensifying the actions of order in the temporarily captured lands of the Zaporozhye region.”
“Over the past day, 21 towns and villages in Zaporizhia region have been covered by Russian shells. Our communities survived 166 shells. Another 18 destroyed houses have been added to the record.”
