Do you want Decadence back in arms in Zelda: Kingdom’s Tears?

Weapon degradation was a nice way to encourage experimentation in BOTW’s Hylian sandbox. I appreciated what you contributed to your journey through the game, and the weapons were plentiful and varied enough to be worth trying just to see what they did, from the elementary blade to the wooden spoon. Not once have I come forward in a situation where nothing is in hand; For me, the balance that the developers there struck was ingenious.

My only irritation with the mechanic is based on the Master Sword, specifically the 60 version maxing out that I got once I went through all the DLC trials. I understand why, from a design perspective, he was given his own brand of durability earlier in the game and needed to be “charged” periodically. But once I established myself, overcame the trials, and gave Calamity Ganon a serious blow, I walked away from my victory to find that the Blade of Evil’s Bane was still running low.

So, it would be great if the evil Master Sword that we glimpsed in TOTK – once sufficiently refurbished, tempered, etc. – retains his prowess permanently at the end of the game. Otherwise, yay degradation.

I honestly wasn’t that bothered about the weapon’s durability during my game, but after a while the game came out, it became such a meme that everyone got annoyed with it. But that didn’t really change my mind! I think weapon durability can create these very organic moments where your sword explodes at the worst time during a boss fight, and I think those are worth something.

However… I still think it could be improved, because I’m pretty sure swords don’t actually explode, so I wouldn’t mind turning the durability system into more of a Monster Hunter deal, where you have to keep weapons blunt, and finding a sword is a rarity Not the swords that are found in every nook and cranny in the world.

At first, I wasn’t happy with the weapon durability in Breath of the Wild. I’m used to going to all enemies and attacking them on basically everything, and I thought I could do the same here, like it or not. In the early BOTW hours I pretty much ran out of guns. I would often scramble for resources, fight my way through Hyrule with the Sheikah Slate, and throw rocks or boughs at Moblins. Have you always been effective? No. But was it fun? yes.

I guess that’s when I realized the beauty of the BOTW weapon system. Basically everything in a BOTW is an item. Something to use, a resource to survive. Weapons were no exception. It didn’t matter if my ax broke in two or if my sword smashed in my hand – something was waiting for me nearby. And I will need to learn how to deal with it.

For Tears of the Kingdom, I would almost 100% return that mechanic, but there will be some tweaks. Given everything and their mom needing a crafting mechanic, I can totally see adding crafting to TOTK to my chagrin, but if Pokémon can do it, Zelda probably does it even better. Make new weapons or repair old ones? It looks fine, right…?

I kind of liked the weapon degradation in Breath of the Wild. What started as a frustrating pocket-full of sticks quickly became a tactical twist in the series’ format and something I had so much fun organizing. Finding a new weapon gave me an enormous amount of joy, and while there was a lot of heartbreak when it broke before I had a chance to say goodbye, it made the adventure feel that much more satisfying.

Of course, there is a certain amount of tweaking I’d like to see in Kingdom Tears. Obviously making them last a bit longer would be a bonus, but wouldn’t it also be nice to see that we get the ability to add some (limited) durability boosts to some of our favorite weapons? This is tricky and will definitely need to be used in moderation – good job I’m no game developer, hey – but it might make the sense of customization a little more personal.

It would also prevent idiots like me from taking over the last stage of Ganon with nothing but a branch, but that’s a different matter, I guess.

The durability of the weapon didn’t really bother me. Honestly, maxing out the weapons in my inventory and having to sacrifice one of them to make room for Savage Lynel’s sword was more of an annoyance (though this thankfully mitigated as I found more and more Korok seeds).

Like everything else, it’s a mechanic that needs a little massage, though what Nintendo does with it is beyond my comprehension right now. I’ve considered the idea of a single-use item in the game that gives one weapon unlimited durability, but that’s riddled with potential problems. Why would you even bother using anything else if you have a weapon that does decent damage and doesn’t break, for example?

I think the best thing Nintendo could do with this is simply adjust the time it takes for the weapon to fully break; Maybe it gives us more time with each weapon, or allows us to fix it easier. I don’t want Tears of the Kingdom to offer literal mechanics or anything equally silly, but there’s definitely something to explore here.

What would you like to see happen to TOTK weapons? Perhaps they could take a tip from the book Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and expand on the upgrade possibilities for individual weapons? Would you welcome more craft style mechanics? Fill out the following surveys and then let us know in the comments.
