UK weather: Freezing fog warning for much of England – conditions trigger air pollution alert in London | UK News

Freezing fog will create dangerous driving conditions in England on Sunday, the Met Office said, as the Mayor of London warned the weather would exacerbate air pollution in the capital.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for fog covering much of England, including Yorkshire, the South East and the Midlands.

Forecasters said travelers should plan for slower journey times by car, possible disruption to bus and train services and the chance of flight delays or cancellations.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan warned that pollution will intensify on Sunday as cold and foggy conditions trap emissions from cars and trucks burning fossil fuels.

“On Sunday, along with the very cold temperatures we’re seeing, we’re also expecting moderate to high levels of air pollution,” he said.

The mayor issued a “moderate” air pollution warning.

Air pollution increases the risk of respiratory disease, heart disease, and lung cancer and tends to affect the already sick, children, the elderly, and the poor, according to the World Health Organization.

The mayor urged Londoners to “look after each other by choosing to walk, cycle or use public transport, avoid unnecessary journeys by car, stop engine idling and not burn wood or garden waste, all of which contribute to rising levels of pollution”.

“This is especially important in order to protect those who are most vulnerable,” he added.

The warning tops a very cold week, when temperatures dropped below -10C in parts of the UK amid snow and ice.

But the Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said the worst of the cold snap was over, with temperatures rising next week across the whole of the UK.

Mr Snell said: “Next week, looking at the hard front, it looks very nice.

“We’re starting to lose the fog risk and temperatures are generally about where they should be.

“We’ll probably miss a really hard frost. In terms of ice and snow, it certainly looks like we’re past the worst.

“We have to keep an eye on the fog risks in general this cold snap, although the main risks from it seem to be starting to diminish.”

The change will come as the Arctic blast that has swept the UK in the past five days gives way to warmer air from the Atlantic, but it will take longer to reach the southern regions.
