The San Jose Earthquakes have acquired goalkeeper Daniel from Serie A Brazilian club Internacional, using Target Allocation Funds (TAM).
He joins during the 2024 Major League Soccer season, with an option for 2025.
“Daniel comes to San Jose with an impressive pedigree from a top South American league and club,” Earthquakes general manager Chris Leach said in a statement. He has participated in nearly 50 matches in the Brazilian top flight, as well as in domestic and international tournaments.
“We think his quality will add a different level of competition to the goalkeeper position.”
Daniel managed 37 clean sheets in 83 matches for Internacional, conceding just 74 goals. He’s now ready to compete against San Jose local and current goaltender JT Marcinkowski, who has been a staple of the Western Conference team since 2020.
The San Jose Earthquakes also boast highly rated domestic goaltender Emmanuel Ochoa, a dual national who has capped both the Mexican and US youth national teams. He previously played for MLS Next Pro Earthquakes II.
The team will be looking to bolster its defense after finishing the 2022 MLS campaign in last place of the Western Conference table with just 35 points in 34 games and an 8W-15L-11D record. The Earthquakes forced a goal difference of -17, with 52 goals scored and 69 conceded.
New coach Lucie Gonzalez is now hoping the new reinforcements can propel San Jose to success in 2023.
The team begins the 2023 season on February 25 when they visit Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
