BA saw 70 cancellations on Sunday and 80 on Monday due to fog after Heathrow imposed a reduction in flight levels for safety reasons and de-icing measures caused delays.

Passengers took to social media to claim they were stranded on planes at Heathrow thanks to the freezing weather.

Ben Weinberger, a solicitor who landed the BA flight from Chicago at 6.45am, wrote on Twitter: “BA294 landed on time, despite freezing fog, but @HeathrowAirport seems unable to provide a gate…or even A parking spot, because we’re just sitting around, waiting to find a place to get off.”

A shuttle eventually showed up an hour later, he said, adding, “It’s a lot to get to work on time today.”
