Latest PMQs: Rishi Sunak talks about Zahawi’s tax affairs at PMQs

[ad_1]

The dispute over Nadim Al-Zahawi now revolves around six words he said a week ago to the Prime Minister, and the asteroid of new information that landed at the end of the week.

In Prime Minister’s Questions last Wednesday, Rishi Sunak was asked about Zahawi and his answer was eloquent, bordering on dismissiveness.

Al-Sinak said Al-Zahawi had “already covered this issue in its entirety”. These are the six crucial words.

The next revelations were to publicly humiliate the prime minister, because at the end of the week Zahawi admitted he had paid a fine to Revenue and Customs when he decided on what appeared to be a huge tax bill – in the region of £5m. .

This was news to them, Downing Street told us, and soon Al Zahawi had word that a man named Sir Lowry Magnus was on his case, the new Ethics Adviser to the Prime Minister.

In other words, Rishi Sunak has gone from rhetorical endorsement to outright public equivocation about the behavior of his party chief.

We can expect Labor to present all of this well in the PM’s questions later.
