A man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting Matt Hancock on the London Underground.

The former health minister and reality TV contestant is not believed to have been injured in the incident, but his spokesperson said it was an “unpleasant encounter”.

The alleged attack began on Tuesday morning at Westminster Station before continuing on a crowded Underground train.

British Transport Police said it had received a report of a man being “assaulted and harassed” at the station next to the House of Commons just before 9am.

“A 61-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of public assault and breach of public order and remains in detention,” the force said. Police investigation continues.

A spokesman for Hancock said: “Both the London transport staff and the British Transport Police were fantastic and the man has since been arrested.”

He added that “this kind of behavior is rare” and stressed “the importance of blocking baseless misinformation that causes so much harm.”

“Matt wants to put on record his thanks to Transport for London and British Transport Police for their exceptional work,” the spokesperson added.

Video circulating online, which appears to have been shot by a man verbally abusing Hancock over his handling of the pandemic, showed a transportation worker supporting the deputy through most of his apparent ordeal.

Hancock was health secretary at the start of the coronavirus pandemic and was a key figure in the lockdown restrictions and vaccine rollout that followed.

He resigned in June 2021 after a televised television image was leaked that showed him kissing a counselor in his office, in breach of his social distancing guidelines. In November, the Tory party whip was suspended after he agreed to appear on the celebrity show… Get Me Out of Here!

He said last month that he would relinquish his membership of Parliament in the upcoming elections.
