A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Malibu, California, early Wednesday, followed by several aftershocks.
According to the US Geological Survey, the first quake occurred at 2 a.m. local time about 10 miles south of Malibu Beach and 15 miles southwest of Santa Monica. Just seconds after the first tremor, a second quake was reported – an initial earthquake of magnitude 3.5, 10 miles south of Malibu Beach. The depth of the second quake was reported to be about 8 miles, according to the USGS.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said in an alert that it has entered “earthquake mode,” adding that all 106 stations across the city will begin scanning for damage.
Aftershocks of magnitude 2.8 and 2.6 hit the same area, according to the USGS.
“The LAFD is now in earthquake mode. All 106 fire stations will conduct a strategic survey of their areas, examining all major areas of concern (transportation infrastructure, places for large gatherings, residential buildings, power lines, etc.). This survey will be conducted “Once this process is complete and the reports consolidated, assuming there is no significant damage, the earthquake status will be complete. These are the earthquakes,” Nicholas Prang of the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement, per Fox 11, at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The operation usually takes less than one hour.
