Ukraine’s president has told Sky News he is “not interested” in meeting Vladimir Putin for peace talks, saying he is “no one”.
In an exclusive interview with Kay Burley, Volodymyr Zelensky said that he “doesn’t understand who makes the decisions in Russia” and that while Moscow asks for peace, the point is to attack Ukraine with missiles.
Zelensky also responded to speculation of a Russian attack on Ukraine in the coming weeks, recalling how he felt when he realized the invasion began last year.
When asked if meeting with Mr. Putin would help resolve the war, Mr. Zelensky said: “It’s not interesting for me. It’s not interesting to meet, it’s not interesting to talk… I really don’t understand who makes the decisions in Russia.” ..”
The president said people are his number one priority, adding: “I don’t want to fight on Russian soil.
“I just want them to stop the war as soon as possible, and leave our country as soon as possible.
“I can tell you for sure if they leave our lands, the war will stop. That’s all.”
When asked if it was too late for talks, Zelensky said: “After a full-scale invasion, for me [Mr Putin] no one “.
Russia is losing a lot of people.
As speculation mounts about a Russian troop surge, Zelensky said Ukrainian forces are monitoring the situation in the eastern districts of Luhansk and Bakhmut in Donetsk.
The president said that there have been more powerful attacks and attacks in recent days – and that it is very important for Ukrainian forces to have a defensive force.
He added, “It all depends on how well we can rein them in… In the East they advance and lose a lot of people. It’s just an extraordinary number. They don’t care about it. I mean, they don’t count their people that’s a fact.”
“We count their people. But we don’t have exact numbers. There are a lot of casualties on their part. But from what we’ve seen and counted already, there are thousands dead on their part, and they just throw at them and throw and throw and throw and throw.”
Bakhmut witnessed the front line, where Russian Wagner mercenaries and Ukrainian forces have been fighting fiercely for months.

0:59 Moment Zelenskyy learns about tanks
Thankful for the tanks
During the interview – which was filmed on Mr Zelensky’s 45th birthday – the Ukrainian president learned that Germany had decided to send 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv after weeks of hesitation.
He told Sky News he was “very grateful” for the tanks but warned that the quantity of the vehicles and the time for their delivery were “critical”.
Washington also announced yesterday that it will send 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv, following Germany’s promise.
The United States had previously resisted sending its own vehicles to Ukraine.
Abrams is one of the most powerful American tanks. The total cost of a single Abrams vehicle can vary, and can be over $10m (£8m) per tank when training and sustainability are included.
The UK became the first Western country to promise main battle tanks when Rishi Sunak pledged to deliver 14 Challenger 2s this month.
The series of announcements of modern battle tanks for Ukraine is a heavy blow to Mr. Putin’s forces.
