Frank Lampard broke his silence after being sacked by Everton feeling “disappointed” he “couldn’t have done more” before his exit.
The Chelsea legend took over at Everton in January 2022 following the ill-fated reign of Rafael Benitez.
Lampard managed to keep Everton in the Premier League last season as they finished ahead of Leeds United and Burnley in 16th place.
But the Toffees haven’t been able to get any going this season as they are once again in the midst of a relegation battle.
Everton are winless in ten matches in all competitions and are joint bottom of the Premier League with Southampton.
Lampard has now spoken of his dismissal. He has insisted he will “always be proud of the incredible work” he did to save Everton from relegation last season.
“When I joined Everton last year I knew we had gone through a difficult moment and I will always be proud of the incredible work and support from everyone involved to keep the team in the Premier League last season,” Lampard wrote on Instagram.
“Thank you to everyone who played their part as the whole club came together. I will never forget the amazing night we shared against Palace.
“I would like to thank all of Everton for the welcome you have given me, my staff and my family. It is truly a special club with a big heart and an incredible history.
“I’m disappointed we couldn’t achieve more together and I wish all the players and everyone at Everton the very best for the future.”
The Everton board are now looking to appoint a successor to Lampard ahead of their February 4 match against Arsenal in the Premier League.
Sky Sports reports that Marcelo Bielsa and Sean Daichy are the “two favorites” for the role.
Former Leeds United boss Bielsa is said to be traveling to London for talks with the club. He and Daichi are said to have been “impressed” when they met the Everton hierarchy “over the past few days”.
The Toffees are said to be “still hoping” that they can set up a date “before this weekend.”
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has stated that owner Farhad Moshiri will “do everything he can” to get Bielsa.
“I have great respect for Sean Dyche and think he would do very well if he joined Everton,” said Ornstein.
However, he is not Farhad Moshiri’s first choice. This is Bielsa. I think Moshiri will do everything he can to get Bielsa on the line.
“Whether he is considered the right person and whether others consider him a good fit at Everton as well, I don’t really know.
“I suspect there will be some in favor of someone like Dyche to get them out of this mess and try to rebuild. He will come with a smaller crew, and it will be a less complicated deal to do.”
He adds, “From the things you hear, I think Daichi will be up for the job, and Bielsa might be hard to convince, but it’s not a good situation for Everton. It’s a bit of a mess at the club.”
