The shooting followed a deadly Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank on Thursday in the Jenin refugee camp in which nine Palestinians were killed.

Israeli medics said a gunman opened fire and killed at least five people outside a synagogue in East Jerusalem before being shot dead.

After the shootings on Friday, the Magen David Adom emergency service said it was treating 10 wounded people, some of whom were in critical condition.

Israeli police said the gunman was shot dead at the scene.

“What we understand happened is that a car was stopped in front of a synagogue, and a gunman got out and opened fire,” said James Bayes, Al Jazeera correspondent, from East Jerusalem.

Sources from the Israeli health services say five people were killed. Some media reported that this could be higher – as many as seven fatalities. The information is very confused.”

A police statement said that “a terrorist attack took place in a synagogue in Jerusalem… The shooter was neutralized at the scene. Large police forces are at the scene.”

The attack follows a deadly Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank on Thursday in the Jenin refugee camp. Nine Palestinians, including an elderly woman, were killed after dozens of Israeli soldiers attacked the home of suspected militants, leading to several hours of intense fighting.

Gaza militants then fired rockets and Israel carried out air strikes overnight, but exchanges were limited.

Israeli military raids have become commonplace over the past year, killing at least 200 Palestinians – combatants and civilians.

Israeli civilians and soldiers have also been killed in attacks by Palestinians in Israel and the Occupied Territories.

Friday’s shooting came amid heightened tensions. The Palestinians marched in fury and buried the last Palestinians killed by the Israeli forces the day before.

Clashes broke out between Israeli forces and Palestinian protesters after the funeral of a 22-year-old Palestinian north of Jerusalem and elsewhere in the occupied West Bank.

Crowds of Palestinians waved the flags of both Fatah, the party that controls the Palestinian Authority, and the flags of Hamas, which rules Gaza. In the streets of the town of Al-Ram, masked Palestinians threw stones and fired firecrackers at the Israeli police, who responded with tear gas.

The leader of the Israeli opposition, former Prime Minister Yair Lapid, called Friday’s attack “horrific and heartbreaking”.
