A police officer serving in D.C. has been fired from the force after he requested and obtained a photo of a dead man.
PC Bonnie Murphy, who asked her colleague Jamie Lewis to send her a photo of a decomposing corpse to show her family, was turned down without warning.
Lewis would have been sacked had he not already been fired and jailed for two years and nine months in December 2021 for taking pictures of two murder victims – Nicole Smallman and Pippa Henry.
The two women were celebrating Henry’s birthday in a park in Wembley, northwest London, in June 2020 when they stabbed Daniel Hussein to death.
Lewis was one of the officers in charge of guarding the bodies but he took selfies with them and shared the photos via WhatsApp.
An investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which ran from July 2020 to October 2021, found that Lewis had received and passed to Murphy a photograph of a decomposing body in Newham, east London, at her request.
He also helped her cheat on a police driving test. The day after Lewis’ arrest over the Wembley incident, Murphy tells her supervisor that Lewis sent her WhatsApp messages asking if she wanted answers to the basic police written driver’s exam.
When she agreed, Lois sent her pre-police driving test materials and the answer sheet to the exam he had taken the previous month. She also used Google during the exam.
A disciplinary committee ruled that they had breached police professional conduct standards and had acted with serious misconduct.
Sal Nissim, IOPC Regional Director, said: “The period following someone’s death is already difficult enough for their loved ones, so knowing that a photo was taken and shared inappropriately by police officers only exacerbates their grief, and undermines their trust in the police.” DC Service and profession as a whole.
“We welcome the committee’s decision and hope that today’s outcome will show that this behavior is not taken lightly and can lead to serious consequences for the officers involved.”
Murphy will be placed on the police academy’s banned list. Lewis was actually placed on the banned list after a speedy hearing organized by the Met following his conviction and imprisonment.
The officer who took the dead man’s photo had a disciplinary meeting for misconduct in August 2022 and ordered a reflective practice review process to learn and reflect on their actions.
