JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) – February is Missouri Earthquake Awareness Month. This year, there will be an emphasis on the importance of preparing for a major earthquake.
Located in southeastern Missouri, the New Madrid seismic region has some of the strongest earthquakes in the United States. From 1811 to 1812, a series of large earthquakes destroyed buildings, tolled church bells hundreds of miles away, and even caused the Mississippi River to retreat for a short time.
The NMSZ is still active today, with about 200 earthquakes each year, even if most of them are too small to be felt. While no one can predict exactly when an earthquake will occur, scientists agree that large earthquakes in this region still pose a risk.
The State Emergency Management Agency is reminding Missourians to prepare in the event of a major earthquake in the NMSZ. When you start shaking, remember to “Drop, Dive, and Stop.” Get down on your knees, cover your head, sit under a desk or table if possible and continue until the shaking stops. Falling debris is the most common method of injury.
It is important to prepare before an earthquake occurs. To prepare, be sure to follow these simple safety steps:
Attach bookcases to wall studs, install sturdy latches on cabinets and fasten your home’s water heater to wall screws. If your water heater tipped over, it could cause a fire or gas leak, and you could lose a valuable water resource. Secure the overhead light fixtures and move heavy items from the higher shelves to the lower shelves. First aid supplies, portable radio, drinking water and blankets. A major earthquake can leave families unaccompanied for weeks. Create a plan to connect with the family. Locate a relative who lives at least 100 miles away who anyone can call to check in and let your family know you’re safe, learn how to turn off your gas and water, and find out if your home is covered for earthquake damage. Most homeowners insurance does not include earthquake coverage as it must be purchased separately.
Many resources are available for families, schools, and businesses on the SEMA earthquake preparedness website. This includes fact sheets, interactive maps, and informational videos that explain what to do in the event of an earthquake.
