A senior EU official said Moscow has moved its invasion of Ukraine to a “different stage” as Russian President Vladimir Putin now considers it a “war against NATO and the West”.

Thanks to Western provisions for Ukraine’s military equipment — including tank pledges from Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom — Russia has moved from a concept of special operations to a concept now of war against NATO and the West,” said Stefano Sannino, Secretary General of the European Union’s European External Action Service.

“I think this latest development in terms of armed supply is just an evolution of the situation and the way Russia has begun to take the war to a different stage,” Sanino said, referring to indiscriminate attacks on civilians and non-military targets.

By providing military equipment, the EU as a whole and other countries “only give the possibility to save lives and allow Ukrainians to defend (themselves) from these barbaric attacks,” he added at a press conference in Tokyo.

The United States and Germany announced on Wednesday that they would send advanced battle tanks to Ukraine in what one expert called an “armored strike force”. Military hardware will help Kyiv break through the stalemate as the conflict enters its twelfth month.

Meanwhile, UK Defense Secretary Alex Choke confirmed that the UK will start training Ukrainian soldiers on Monday.

Latest update 1674852163 showed key developments from Friday President Volodymyr Zelensky described the situation on the front as “extremely acute”, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region where Russia is stepping up its offensive. Zelensky reported major battles for Volidar, to the southwest of the Donetsk regional capital, and Bakhmut to the northeast. Bakhmut has been largely crushed by repeated Russian attacks, local Ukrainian officials have reported heavy shelling in the north, northeast and east, and a 74-year-old Spanish man was arrested earlier this week over a series of bomb-laden letters sent to institutions including The Spanish Prime Minister and the investigating judge said that the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid in late 2022 sought to pressure his country’s authorities to abandon support for Ukraine, and a Russian cemetery revealed the army of Wagner prisoners. There were about 200 graves at the site, on the outskirts of the village of Bakinskaya in the Krasnodar region, when Reuters visited it in late January.

Who sends tanks to Ukraine?

Germany has announced that it will send its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine – and will allow other countries to do so as well. Berlin will send 14 initially, Poland also says it will send 14, and Canada says it will send four.

Norway also said it would send the Panthers, while Spain said it was open to giving them.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the tanks are needed to replenish his country’s military might ahead of what he believes will be a surge of Russian offensives in the spring – with heavy fighting already raging in eastern Ukraine for weeks. Kyiv also wants them to try to regain the lands captured by Moscow’s forces.

1674882000 Pyongyang attacks the United States for pledging tanks to Ukraine

North Korea has denounced the United States’ decision to provide Ukraine with advanced battle tanks to help fight the Russian invasion, saying Washington is escalating a vicious “proxy war” aimed at destroying Moscow.

The comments by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister highlighted the country’s deepening alliance with Russia over the war in Ukraine as it confronts the United States and its Asian allies over its growing nuclear weapons and missile programme.

North Korea has blamed the United States for the crisis in Ukraine, insisting that the West’s “policy of hegemony” forced Moscow to take military action to protect its security interests.

It has also used the distraction from the war to accelerate its own weapons development, testing more than 70 missiles in 2022 alone, including nuclear-capable weapons believed to be capable of targeting South Korea and the US mainland.
