Hexham, 25 miles west of Newcastle, is described as a “charming market town”, with flower gardens in the city center and a Grade II listed abbey.
It is a popular stopping point for tourists and locals, and serves as a gateway to Hadrian’s Wall and Northumberland National Park.
Kennedy said, “It is an absolute tragedy. The town is in complete shock. To lose one of our children attending a local high school is horrible.”
“Parents are really concerned about the health of their children because they are all part of this community. The schools are all really concerned that their children are really feeling the pain, suffering and trauma of such a horrible incident.”
On Saturday, the local secondary school, Queen Elizabeth High, canceled its performance of Worship God after the news.
Kennedy added, “For such a young man, and alleged perpetrator to be a young man, to happen, on Main Street at 5 p.m., is just a shock. Everyone is traumatized and struggling to come to terms with it. Many lives will be ruined.”
The Reverend David Glover, Dean of Hexham Abbey, invited members of the community to come and light a candle to “reflect on this terrible tragedy”.
He told The Telegraph: “We are absolutely shocked and worried that this happened. It’s horrible. It’s, of course, a shock to our community. There’s a huge sense of shock. That’s the best way to describe it really.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the tragic events.”
