Ukraine calls for combat aircraft as next priority after securing tanks | Globalism

Ukraine said it was confident of securing Western fighter jets as it seeks to shore up military support for NATO after a breakthrough this week in the delivery of modern battle tanks.

Kyiv has put the F-16 at the top of its wish list, though officials also cited the more advanced F-35 as well as the French-made Eurofighter, Tornado, Rafale and Swedish Gripen fighter.

The F-16, developed in the 1970s, was the fighter jet of choice for many air forces, but it has been gradually being retired from service, which means that in theory there is a deep reservoir of aircraft and spare parts that Ukraine can draw on.
