Hey folks, and welcome to another edition of Box Art Brawl!
In last week’s Brawl, we took a look at one of the few Virtual Boy games (and one that many of you forgot even existed): Panic Bomber. The race was not particularly close this one, with Japan winning comfortably with 71% of the vote. Well done Japan!
This week, we’re going back to the GameCube era to check out one of Hideki Kamiya’s best games: Viewtiful Joe! We’ve got different cover designs across all three main areas this time around, so it’s going to be a proper three-way brawl. Nice.
Launched in 2003, Viewtiful Joe was released exclusively for the GameCube as part of the “Capcom Five”; Five games (well, technically four) Capcom has pledged to create specifically for the GameCube to boost hardware sales and show strong third-party support, including the legendary Resident Evil 4. Of course, most of us now know how it all finally came to pass: three of the four games It made its way to other platforms, with only PN03 remaining a GameCube exclusive.
Still, Viewtiful Joe was a hit, even if it wasn’t particularly a commercial success. It spawned a direct sequel and a couple of spin-off games, and quite frankly, we’re just excited for Capcom to port it to the Switch!
Make sure to cast your vote in the poll below; But first, let’s check out the box art designs themselves.
North America Image: Capcom
Viewtiful Joe’s North American design is probably the most “traditional” of all the variants, in that it simply features the titular hero against a somewhat cluttered background, filled with the game’s various enemies. It’s absolutely gorgeous, full of color from corner to corner, with the logo itself nice and bold on top. lovable!
Europe Pictures: Capcom
huh? Touuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
yes. Europe got two variants of Viewtiful Joe’s box art, though the only difference between them is the color: one is yellow, the other is pink — ta-da! Otherwise, we have the same protagonist in the same situation as the North American variant, and both designs have the same backstory as each other. Why were there two different types? There was just! Heavy pink and somewhat disappointed, remembers this writer, but looking back now..? Yes, they are both really cute.
Japan Image: Capcom
Japan’s design is quite interesting, as it’s the only one of the bunch to have the game’s signature film reel image on top. The protagonist poses in a different (albeit more iconic) pose than the Western design, and we have a really nice pink hue going on with the background, including some pretty flower petals surrounding Joe. This is a great design overall!
What area has the best Viewtiful Joe box art? (1,054 votes) North America 56% Europe 20% Japan 24%
Thanks for voting! We’ll see you next time for another round of Box Art Brawl.
