A four-year-old girl has died after being attacked by a dog in Milton Keynes.
Officers were called shortly after 5pm on Tuesday after reports of a dog attacking the child in the back garden of a house in Broadlands, Netherfield. Thames Valley Police confirmed that the dog has since been humanely destroyed.
The force said that the police are still at the scene of the accident and no one was injured in the incident. The child’s family is supported by specially trained officers. No arrests have been made.
Supt Matt Bullivant said: “This is a very tragic incident, in which we believe a child was killed after being attacked by a dog.
“We are clearly in the early stages of the investigation, and it would be wrong and unhelpful to speculate on the exact circumstances of this incident at this point.
However, in order to ensure public safety, a decision was taken earlier this evening to exterminate the dog involved, and this was done in a humane manner.
“I understand the impact this has on the community and the wider public, and people can expect to see a significant police presence in the area this evening and beyond while our investigation continues.
“I would like to reassure people that there is no reason to believe there is any danger to the wider public at this time.”
