Coffee lovers looking for a strong pick-me-up should shun Starbucks and head to Costa, after cappuccinos were shown to deliver nearly five times as much caffeine as four cans of Red Bull.
Buyers of a medium-sized Costa cappuccino get three shots of espresso and 325mg of caffeine, which is roughly the equivalent of four cups of tea, and way higher than the Starbucks equivalent which has just 66mg.
Study conducted by any consumer group? It revealed an unusual disparity in the amount of caffeine offered by the major coffee chains. She said many of us may be consuming much more or less caffeine than we thought.
While the three-shot Costa Cappuccino was the obvious choice for caffeine addicts, Griggs and Brit A Manager delivered the second and third highest cappuccinos, at 197mg and 180mg respectively. In contrast, an 250ml can of Red Bull – the drink of choice for sleep-deprived teens – contains around 80mg of caffeine.
For those looking to reduce their caffeine intake, an increasingly common situation, the study found a clear “winner” on High Street — Starbucks. It may not wake you up, but a medium cappuccino has a relatively low 66mg of caffeine, and an espresso has half that.
“I think coffee is still functionally about caffeine, and I feel like for the most psychoactive drug in the world, most people have no idea how much they’re taking,” said James Hoffman, coffee expert and World Barista Championship winner in 2007. “I’m not sure that’s a good thing for any kind of supplement you might want to use.”
which? Research has found that one cup of espresso from Pret a Manger delivers the best result – 180 milligrams of caffeine. Pret filter coffee also contained the most caffeine at 271 mg, two and a half times that of the Starbucks version.
Caffè Nero had the second lowest caffeine levels after Starbucks in the cappuccino (110-115 mg) and espresso (45 mg) categories. The FDA considers 400 mg a safe amount of caffeine for a healthy adult to consume daily.
Levi Terrell Johnson, 28, regularly buys cappuccinos from Pret because of how convenient it is. “I have a Pret subscription, so it’s easy for me to use,” he said. “There’s one everywhere. Since I drink a lot of coffee on the go, it’s easier to pay a flat monthly fee than to get one every single day.”
“I like strong coffee and this is my closest coffee shop. I probably need a little more caffeine, I have a very high energy job so I need to stay alert and energized for as long as possible, so I don’t mind being different.”
Shefali Luth, which one? “Many of us rely on coffee to get us through the dark winter mornings, but our research shows that you may be consuming much more or less caffeine than you bargained for,” said the nutritionist.
Loth said that people who are sensitive to caffeine, or need to avoid it for health reasons, such as pregnancy, may want to ask for lower doses in their on-demand drink.

Zoe Parker, 27, said she was really surprised by the difference in caffeine levels between the two chains. She had ordered a caramel frappe from Costa Coffee. She said, “I am really shocked.” “I don’t drink a lot of caffeine in general, so now I’m even more surprised that I thought one coffee would be good.
“I prefer Costa to Starbucks, so I might still go to Costa instead of Starbucks,” Parker added. “Because I rarely drink coffee, I still feel comfortable with a coffee from Costa. If I drink it all the time, it might change my mind. I might go to Starbucks instead once in a while.”

Laurens Dekker, 25, said he’ll be more thoughtful about where he buys his coffee in the future as he tries to limit his caffeine consumption. “I’ve pretty much cut back to just one a day,” he said. “I’ve had six to eight cups. It’s just a lot.”

“I had no idea there was this much of a difference. I thought coffee was just coffee, but maybe I’ll start thinking about it now.”
Hoffman said that regardless of the caffeine content, people tend to have a favorite and knowing the caffeine content may not change their ranking.
“If someone really enjoys Starbucks, they probably won’t enjoy Costa and they probably won’t enjoy Caffe Nero, for example. You have your preference… I think coffee can be very tasty and enjoyable, even when it doesn’t have caffeine, but no I can deny that we all have some kind of caffeine-based relationship with it.”
Most coffee in chains ie? We looked at the advantage of at least two shots of espresso. that? He said another factor that could affect the caffeine content is the variety of coffee beans, with Arabica beans containing about half the caffeine of Robusta beans.
A Costa Coffee spokesperson said the caffeine content of its drinks is clearly displayed in its stores and on its website, and would encourage customers to be aware of the caffeine content.
They added, “All Costa coffees can be enjoyed with decaffeinated coffee, and we offer a wide range of non-caffeinated beverages.”
