Danny Murphy blasts Erik ten Hag for ‘whining and winging’ over Christian Eriksen’s injury and Andy Carroll’s tackle, as Manchester United boss calls on players to get more protection from referees

Danny Murphy has told Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to drop his “nagging and winging” after losing Christian Eriksen to injury.

The Dutchman has called for more protection for his “best players” after the Dane was ruled out until April at the earliest after being forced into an FA Cup fourth-round exit at Reading.

Ten Hag was not happy with Carroll’s dangerous challenge to Eriksen

This poor tackle from Carroll left Eriksen sidelined for three months

Eriksen was fouled and ruled out for three months after a bad scissor tackle from Reading striker Andy Carroll.

Ten Hag later accused Carroll of dangerous play and questioned the protection of the players from the referees after the striker evaded a booking for a challenge – although he was later sent off with two yellow cards for two more steps in the match.

United’s official statement on Eriksen’s injury also made particular mention of Carroll, suggesting the anger towards the former Liverpool player from club chiefs. Eriksen’s injury forced them into the transfer market where they signed Marcel Sabitzer from Bayern Munich on deadline day as cover in midfield. .

But it was Ten Hag’s comments, which spoke of past examples of opposition players not being punished for fouling his own men, that angered ex-Anfield star Murphy.

The TalkSPORT expert also added that his reaction was no prejudice against Manchester United and that he would give the same advice to Jurgen Klopp – and he has done so in the past.

He said to White and Jordan, “It just looks like my winger, moaning. You’re in the Premier League!”

By the way, Andy Carroll got kicked out, but for a different challenge he should have been kicked out for that one.

“But the point is, let’s give that perspective, we’re in a world now where creative attacking players are protected more than ever, more than ever!

“We rarely see bad injuries from bad tackles, very rare, not many, and I think we’re in a good position because of that. I’m not saying we should go back to the good old days where players could knock seven bells off each other.

“I just don’t understand why you would go out and control it when it’s just a consequence of playing football.

Murphy told Ten Hag to stop “whining” and carry on with the player he had

“Eriksen lost and he’s frustrated and we don’t want to see bad tackles… but he swings, because then he starts elbowing Martinez!”

“I don’t mind him saying, ‘I’m frustrated with the tackle, it was naughty, Carroll should have been sent off, it was awful, I’m disappointed with Eriksen, but it’s football, it happens, that’s why we have a big squad and we have to keep up with it.'”

“He’s working at Manchester United, be positive! ‘We’ve got other players, we’ll handle it’ – don’t pull a list, how much would he say? Elbow on Martinez in the palace? I saw him, he was close to nothing! Why are you talking about that? Come on!” It’s English Premier League football!

“And it’s not just because he’s Ten Hag, I would say the same about Jurgen Klopp. I sat here and talked about Klopp whining and said exactly the same thing. He’s not a Man United thing.

Ten Hag has exceeded all expectations. He did a great job, he got a lot right, but the winger? What manager stands there and starts bashing about players getting injured last week against Palace?

“I don’t like it. There is no plot here.”
