Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has dropped all charges against him.
The 21-year-old attacker faced allegations of attempted rape, coercive conduct and assault. All three charges relate to the same woman.
Greater Manchester Police said the decision was “not taken lightly”.
The investigation began just over a year ago in January 2022. A trial date has been set for November 27 of this year.
In a statement, the GMB said the “criminal proceedings” had been “discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service”.
Senior Superintendent Michaela Kerr, the GMP’s chief of public protection, said it was “fair” for the force to release the latest development given the “significant media coverage of this issue.”
She added, “The investigation team has been in regular contact with the legal team, providing any noticeable updates, and thus understanding the justifications for stopping the proceedings at this stage, and that this decision was not taken lightly.
And despite the media and public interest in this issue, we have decided not to comment on it in any further detail.
However, Ms. Kerr appealed to people who felt they were, or may have been, a victim, reiterating GMP’s commitment to “investigating allegations of violence against women and girls”.
She continued: “An increasing number of officers are receiving specialized training and the force is continually using the tools available across the criminal justice system to keep people safe and care for victims.
“If you feel that you are or might be a victim, please do not let this issue stop you from seeking help.”
A CPS spokesperson said: “It is our duty to keep cases under constant review.
“In this case, the combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and the new material that came to light meant that there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In the circumstances, it is our duty to stop the case.”
“We have made our decision clear to all parties. We will always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report it to the police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is given.”
When contacted by Sky Sports News, Manchester United did not comment. Greenwood is still suspended by United.
United announced on January 30 last year that they would not return to training or play any matches “until further notice”.
The Bradford-born came through United’s academy and made his Champions League debut at home to Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019.
He has one cap for England, playing in the Nations League match against Iceland in September 2020.
