North Island earthquake: 4.8-magnitude earthquake strikes near Te Aroha, shakes Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato

Thousands of people across the Upper North Island woke up after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit 5km south of Te Aroha overnight.

GeoNet reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 6 kilometers just after 2 am.

More than 11,000 people reported feeling after the earthquake, and most of them said the tremor was mild (over 5,000).

This comes after a magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred near Te Aroha last month on January 4.

GeoNet reported that the quake struck 5 km south of Te Aroha, at a depth of 7 km, just after 5.30 am.

Another tremor was reported later at 11.21 that day, also located 5 km south of Te Aroha.

More than 20,000 people reported feeling shaking during the morning earthquake.

Robin, connected to Newstalk ZB, felt the earthquake in Matamata south of Te Aroha. “I was lying on the bed and felt a shake.”

Another listener, Gale, also felt it north of Te Aroha.

“It’s been really steep here in Paeroa. I was asleep. I was like, Hey deck, do I go under the door or what do I do?”

Wendy’s caller felt out at Papakura. I was lying in bed just listening [Newstalk ZB] Then the house shook, then the bed shook.”
