Blackpool has been hit by a magnitude 1.5 earthquake, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS). The quake struck at a depth of 1.2 miles (2 km) outside the village of Wheaton just after 7.30pm on Friday.

Residents of Blackpool, as well as in the nearby villages of Little Plumpton and Westby, reported feeling the earthquake.

There were also some reports to the BGS of “noises like a train approaching”, saying “the dogs were alarmed” and “computers and safes rattled”.

Another report stated that “several neighbors heard it”, although staff at Wheaton Village Hall and at Ream Hills Holiday Park outside the village said they did not hear anything, as did members of Wheaton Parish Council.

The Northwest Ambulance Service said it had not heard any reports of injuries.

39 earthquakes have been recorded around the British Isles in the last 60 days, according to BGS. The largest event occurred near the Isle of Mull in Scotland on January 19, which had a magnitude of 3.2.

The BGS also records earthquakes caused by human activity, but none have been recorded in the last 50 days.

In 2019, the government imposed a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing in the UK, part of the reasoning behind the decision being tremors from shale gas extraction at the Quadrilla site in Preston New Road in Lancashire.
