Relatives of people killed in earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have spoken of their grief and devastation at the events that unfolded thousands of miles from the UK.

Akif Rizgar Wan, 63, lost 20 family members in the disaster and said he had been “in tears for four days”.

Speaking from a Kurdish community center in Haringey, north London, Mr Rizgar Wan said: “My family, who survived, were fortunate enough to have a spare tent.

“In my family, 20 of my close family members were killed.

“I’ve been crying for four days. I’m crying but I’m not ready to cry. We are here and proud to be Kurds, and we are resilient.”

Another man at the same center echoed his grief, Akif Ceng, 52, who lost nine relatives in the quake.

He said he feels “terrible,” and he and his family suffered sleepless nights because of the tragedy. He said: “At the moment we don’t even know what to do.

“Our friends have traveled to Turkey and we are talking to them. Nothing is what it seems and what you see on TV is not the real thing – it is much worse.

“The bodies are everywhere, they can’t identify them and they don’t know where their families are. There are mass graves and no places in hospitals.”
