ORLANDO, FL — Loved ones of an Orlando couple mourn their loss after a devastating earthquake left more than 20,000 people dead in Turkey and Syria.

Alex Hernandez said his friend Alex Elgin recently moved to Florida. After Elgin’s wedding last year, friends said having a baby became a major focus for Elgin and his wife.

“And then we got this call this week from his family that he’s already in the building, staying on the third floor,” Hernandez said. “They are obviously holding hands in bed, and also his mother is dead.”

He started working with Ilgin in the real estate industry, Hernandez said, adding that Ilgin worked as a mortgage broker.

He said, “I hope he’s never gone because again he was a pillar of our faith, and to me, he was very important, and he’s gone, so I think it’s something that’s going to hurt all of us, right now, today.”

Hernandez said the couple’s recent trip was for medical treatment to increase the likelihood of Elgin’s wife becoming pregnant.

He was also planning to buy his house this year with his new wife. He just moved to Dr. Phillips six months ago, Hernandez said.

The group plans to hold a memorial service for Ilgin on March 4.
