Nearly a week after the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake shattered the lives of millions of people in an area of 100 square kilometers in Turkey and Syria, the desperate search for survivors continues.
The quake occurred before dawn last Monday when most people were at home in bed.
On Sunday, the official death toll reached 33,000, a number that is sure to rise as many homes in both countries lie in ruins.
The earthquake hit areas of Syria under government control as well as rebel-held areas in the northwest of the country. One of the biggest challenges for aid agencies has been negotiating the political landscape, and in many areas, rudimentary aid from abroad has only been pouring in.
However, Turkey has borne the brunt of the known casualties. Antioch, a city that once had a population of 400,000, was almost completely destroyed.
Amidst the devastation and despair, rescue teams are still searching for survivors, and in some cases their efforts are still being rewarded.
When I ask if they have the energy to keep going, they answer that they should because of their faith and love for their country.
About 13 million people were directly affected by the disaster, spreading over an area larger than many European countries.
The situation in Antakya is still very chaotic with many roads and many streets completely closed. There are still thousands, if not tens of thousands of people under the rubble.
