Turkey and Syria earthquake live updates: Three rescued from under rubble in Turkey as death toll passes 45,000

[ad_1]

The death toll from a catastrophic earthquake in Turkey and Syria rose to more than 40,000 on Friday, as hopes of finding survivors faded.

Officials and medics said 38,044 people died in Turkey and 3,688 in Syria in the Feb. 6 quake, bringing the confirmed total to 41,732.

On Thursday, Turkish rescuers pulled a 17-year-old girl and a woman in her 20s from the rubble, nearly 11 days after the 7.8-magnitude tremor struck.

But Turkey has halted rescue operations in some areas, and the government in war-torn Syria has done the same in areas under its control.

The Turkish losses make it the deadliest natural disaster in its history after the Ottoman era.
