The former Newcastle United winger says he found Christian Atsu dead under the building he lived in almost two weeks after the Turkey earthquake.

Atsu, 31, spent eight years signed with Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Bournemouth, Everton and Newcastle.

The Ghana international has not been seen since the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that killed more than 38,000 people in Turkey and more than 5,800 in Syria.

“It is with the deepest of hearts that I have to announce to all our well-wishers that unfortunately Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning,” his agent Nana Secher wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.”

Atsu FC, Hatayspor, had initially reported that they were saved with “injuries” but after one day that situation changed.

“Rip my friend,” former Chelsea captain John Terry wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Chelsea sent “our heartfelt condolences to Christian’s family and friends and to all those affected by the earthquake tragedy.”

Galatasaray Istanbul said: “We are saddened to learn that Atakas Hatayspor footballer Christian Atsu lost his life in the earthquake that suffocated our country.

Our condolences to Christian Atsu’s family, fans and Hatayspor community.

Atsu is survived by his wife, Marie Claire Rubio, and their three children.
