Another earthquake strikes southern Turkey

[ad_1]

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s Hatay province on Monday as the country continued to recover from a devastating earthquake two weeks ago that killed tens of thousands in the country and neighboring Syria.

Turkey’s disaster management agency, AFAD, recorded two tremors of magnitude 6.4 and 5.8 in the Hatay region around the Turkish-Syrian border and reported that response teams are on alert amid aftershocks.

Disaster and Emergency Management is warning citizens to stay away from the coast as a precaution against the possibility of rising sea levels following the earthquake. Hatay Province touches the East Sea.

It is not yet clear whether the new earthquakes caused significant damage. Reuters reported that some of the already damaged buildings may have been subjected to further bombing.

The earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria earlier this month devastated the region with a magnitude of 7.8, toppling buildings and trapping people under rubble. The death toll continued to rise as rescue teams searched for survivors, with nearly 45,000 people killed in Turkey and Syria.

On Sunday, the White House announced an additional $100 million to support Turkey and Syria as the two countries work to recover.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited the affected area over the weekend to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara and tour the damage. Blinken vowed that the United States would help its NATO ally “for as long as it needs.”
