The body of Hatayspor’s sports director, Taner Savut, was recovered on Tuesday more than two weeks after devastating earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria. More than 47,000 people died in the disaster.
Savot has been missing since February 6. His body was found near where Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu, of the same club, was murdered last week.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our sporting director, Taner Savut,” the Turkish Hatayspor team said on Twitter on Tuesday. “We will never forget you, Master Tanner. Rest in heaven. You will always be in our hearts.”
The Turkish Football Federation and top teams in the Turkish league, including Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, also issued messages of condolence in Savut’s memory.
Savute was trapped under the rubble of a luxury apartment building next to Atsu when the first earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck.
Ronesans Residence, the apartment complex was built in 2013 and has since become a symbol of poor building practices in Turkey, which many people blame for the deaths of thousands in this month’s earthquakes.
