Another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 hits the Turkish city of Hatay

Another 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey’s Hatay province on Thursday.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the quake struck at a depth of 9.76 kilometers (6 miles) at 6:35 pm local time (1553 GMT).

Its epicenter was in the Dafni region, the epicenter of the latest quake with a magnitude of 6.4, followed by an aftershock of a magnitude of 5.8.

Hatay Governor Rahmi Dogan said some buildings already damaged by previous earthquakes in the region collapsed in the aftermath of the 5.0-magnitude quake. He continued by saying that there were no reports of injuries or people trapped under the rubble, as most of the buildings in the area had been evacuated.

Six people were killed on Tuesday after the 6.4-magnitude quake followed by a 5.8-magnitude aftershock in Hatay’s Defne and Samandag districts hit the region.

The massive earthquakes of February 6, centered in the south of Kahramanmaraş province, have killed more than 43,500 people, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Report.

About 13.5 million people, or more than 15% of the country’s population, live in the 11 quake-hit provinces, where authorities said more than 139,000 buildings were either destroyed or damaged so badly they needed to be demolished.
