People living in Cornwall felt their homes ‘shaking’ this morning during an earthquake near Penryn.

According to the British Geological Survey, the 1.5-magnitude earthquake occurred at around 6.30 am today (Friday, February 24).

Experts say the quake occurred two kilometers below the surface. It is not clear what caused the earthquake at this point.

People living in the area reported feeling and hearing the quake, with residents sharing their experiences on social media.

Some residents said they felt a “rumbling” that sounded like a “big car”.

One of the residents said: I heard a rumble and thought it was thunder.

The earthquake was felt at a great distance, with people reporting noticing the tremor miles away from Penryn.

One of them said, “I’m more than 10 miles from Helston, and sure enough I heard a bang and felt a tremor.”

Another wrote: “It sounded like a big truck was approaching the house (even though we don’t live next to a road) and it got loud and then the house shook and drove away.”

In March last year, a magnitude 1.6 earthquake was reported in Cornwall following geothermal testing at the Eden Project.
