Turkey earthquake: Another 5.5-magnitude earthquake hits the nation

Another powerful earthquake struck Turkey just weeks after the disaster that killed more than 50,000 people.

A powerful 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey on Saturday as the shattered country tries to rebuild after a series of terrible earthquakes this month.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center said the quake was at a depth of 10 km, after another quake hit Turkey’s Hatay province on Thursday, The Sun reports.

Just days before Monday, several people were killed and hundreds injured when two more earthquakes hit the Turkish-Syrian border.

The latest quakes come after two catastrophic earthquakes that devastated the country on February 6, displacing more than a million people and killing more than 50,000.

Earthquakes, which hit neighboring Syria, also destroyed buildings and infrastructure.

The death toll from the tragedy continues to rise as more bodies are recovered from the rubble of demolished buildings.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said on Friday that the death toll in Turkey due to the earthquakes had risen to 44,218.

As the reported death toll in Syria rose to 5,914, the total death toll in the two countries rose to more than 50,000.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said in an interview with state broadcaster TRT on Wednesday that teams were searching two buildings in the hard-hit Hatay province for more bodies.

He said searches elsewhere were over.

More than 160,000 buildings containing 520,000 apartments collapsed or were badly damaged in the earthquakes that struck hours apart on February 6.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that construction work for about 200,000 apartments in 11 quake-hit provinces in Turkey will start next month.

Last week, a teenage girl was pulled alive from the rubble after being trapped for 248 hours.

Alina Olmes, 17, was found among the wreckage of a collapsed apartment building by rescue workers who had survived for more than 10 days after the disaster.

NATO has pledged to send more than 1,000 containers to be used as temporary shelters for at least 4,000 people displaced by the earthquake.
