PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — A Turkish woman who now lives in Phoenix is raising money for earthquake victims. Melek Akgul-Lee moved to the valley 16 years ago from Turkey. Her heart is broken for the thousands of dead and injured in her homeland. The February 6 earthquake killed at least 45,000 people, displaced millions, and caused an estimated $34 billion in damages.

Akgül told the Arizona family that she has family in Istanbul and is grateful none of them were hurt. But she can’t bear to know that others are in dire need of help. When I heard it, I felt sad and hopeless. The first thing I wanted to do was get on a plane to go and help with the volunteer effort. “But my responsibility here did not allow me to do that,” Akgül told me. Instead, she participates in a fundraiser called the Bridge to Turkey Fund. So far she has raised $10,000 on her own but wants to raise another $10,000. She said it was the only way she could help her.

The Arizona Turkish American League will also be raising money at Second Sunday at Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe this weekend, Akgul-Lee said. They will sell Turkish coffee, pastries and honey. All proceeds from these sales will go to earthquake victims. To learn more about the Bridge to Turkey Fund, click here.
