Japan celebrates the 12th anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima

Japan on Saturday marked 12 years since the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck the country’s northeast, killing more than 15,000 people and triggering a nuclear disaster that will take decades to clean up.

Recovery from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami that devastated Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate prefectures made progress in the following years, but some 31,000 people remained displaced as of November 2022. Clean-up plans at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear complex are also controversial.

More than a decade after the disaster, memorial services are no longer hosted by the national government, with municipalities in the affected areas holding events on a smaller scale.
