A 4.7-magnitude earthquake rocked Christchurch this afternoon, just hours after a swarm of more than 70 earthquakes struck the Bay of Plenty overnight.

GeoNet said the quake occurred at about 1.42 pm, 20 km northwest of Akaroa. At a depth of 5 km it caused a slight shaking.

There was also a series of lighter earthquakes in the area about 30 minutes ago at a magnitude of 4.2, 2.6 and 2.7, with mild to moderate shaking.

Nearly 7,000 felt reports have been recorded by GeoNet from the 4.7 shake. She said on Twitter that the quake was “felt across the city, Port Hills and across the country”.

Most of the sensory reports were weak to mild.
