Canterbury has been rocked by two earthquakes this afternoon – the largest with a magnitude of 4.7.
The first GeoNet was estimated at 1.42pm and was centered 20 kilometers northwest of Akaroa and resulted in a slight shaking.
It was 5 kilometers deep.

The earthquake may have been felt in Akaroa, Amberley, Arthur’s Bass, Ashburton, Cheviot, Christ Church, Cleverden, Geraldine, Hanmer Springs, Methven, Oxford and surrounding areas.

“It’s been a very long time,” said one man who lives in the Kashmir suburb of Christchurch Hill.
“So I thought it might build up more. It just freaked me out,” he told the Herald.
The second quake measured 2.9 on the Richter scale and GeoNet said it was “not noticeable”.
It was centered 20 km southeast of Christchurch at a depth of 4 km.
