Magnitude 4.2 quake strikes near Whakatán, the latest quake in the Bay of Plenty

The recent 4.2 earthquake in the Bay of Plenty was felt by nearly 900 people, described as “violent” by a local resident.

The earthquake occurred at 4.48 this morning, had a depth of 3 km, and its epicenter was 20 km west of Whakatane.

Hundreds of tremors have occurred over the past few days, and the largest tremor was of a magnitude of 4.8.

The first quake had a magnitude of 3.4 at 3.29 am on Saturday.

Yesterday, a GNS seismologist said the earthquake swarm plaguing residents of the Bay of Plenty could last for weeks.

Eastern Bay residents described the earthquake on social media this morning.

“Dunno about ‘The Light’. It’s been a pretty violent shake here in Edgecumbe,” one wrote.

“I was working at the Edgecumbe store when all the lines stopped and the lights were flickering, no thanks!” said another.

Another person commented: “Up the tremors. Fourth day of this in Kawerau. Even bloody tired atm.”
