A series of three earthquakes — with magnitudes of 2.7 and 3.0 — struck Saturday morning in the Oakland Hills, just below the Oakland Zoo, according to the US Geological Survey.
The quakes began at 9:24 a.m. Saturday, with the first quake, a magnitude 3.0, occurring about 4.3 miles below the zoo, which is located in the Oakland Hills outside of San Leandro and just west of Lake Chabot Provincial, the agency reported.
A second earthquake, measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale, occurred at 9:43 am at approximately the same place. A third, with a magnitude of 3.0, followed just 15 seconds later, the agency said, although it was about half a mile shallower.
The USGS initially reported that all three quakes had a magnitude of 3.2 before revising the estimates.
Hundreds of people have told the USGS that they felt the earthquakes, and nearly all of them report mild shaking. There were no immediate reports of damage, including at the Auckland Zoo.
“All of our animals and facilities are safe and sound,” the zoo said in a tweet. “Our people say the earthquake was like a gust of wind.”
