Palestinians in Gaza gathered near the site of destruction on Friday to inspect a large crater in the ground after Israel continued its bombing of targets in the Gaza Strip. Residents of Gaza City were seen inspecting the damage, including damage to a building whose glass windows were shattered and covered with sand. This marks a widening escalation in the region following this week’s violence at one of Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy sites. In 2021, an escalation triggered by clashes at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque spills over into an 11-day war between Israel and Hamas, which rules Gaza. Israeli air strikes on Gaza resumed at dawn Friday, after militants fired more rockets from the besieged enclave, triggering sirens in the Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon. The military said the targets included the entrance to a subway network used to manufacture weapons. The current round of violence began on Wednesday after the Israeli police twice raided Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem. That Thursday led to rockets being fired from Gaza and, in a major escalation, a rocket barrage from Lebanon. Israel also launched rare strikes in southern Lebanon at dawn on Friday.
