Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the past few days had been “obviously difficult” following the arrest of her husband, the former chief executive of the Scottish National Party.
Peter Morell was arrested amid an investigation into the party’s finances and finances on Wednesday 5 April. The 58-year-old was released that night without charge pending further investigations.
In her first comments since Muriel’s arrest, Sturgeon made a brief statement outside her home in Uddingston, near Glasgow today. She said there would be “full co-operation” with the police investigation, but said she could not comment on that “as far as I want to say”.
“The last few days have been obviously difficult, very dramatic at times, but I understand this is part of a process,” she told reporters. Sturgeon added that she intends to “continue my life and work as you would expect.”
Well first, she said, there is clearly nothing I can say about the ongoing investigation. As much as I may wish to say things, I cannot do, other than to say that, as it was in this case, full co-operation will continue.

“The past few days have been obviously difficult, and very exciting at times, but I understand that this is part of a process. I am also entitled to a little bit of privacy in my own home, and I think my neighbors are also entitled to a little bit of privacy too.
“Over the years, as a result of living next door to me, they have experienced more than their fair share of upheaval and inconvenience. This has obviously been particularly the case over the past two years.
“So while you all do your jobs, I hope and know you’ll have some respect for that. So that’s really all I needed to say.” Peter is as at home as you would expect him to be. Peter can’t say anything.

“Again, this isn’t necessarily a matter of choice. That’s just the nature of this.”
When asked if she had been questioned by the police, the former first minister said: “I haven’t but I will cooperate fully with the police… if they do.”

It comes after officers from Police Scotland spent two days checking the former first minister’s home. Investigators cordoned off the property and a major search took place, with police seen removing items and photographing garden tools.
Evidence bags were also seen removed from the Scottish National Party headquarters in Edinburgh.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 58-year-old man who was arrested as a suspect earlier today, Wednesday 5 April 2023, in connection with an ongoing investigation into the SNP’s funding and financing, has been released without charge pending further investigation: The man was questioned by Police Detectives Scotland after his arrest at 7.45am, and was released at 6.57pm.
“Officers also carried out searches today at a number of addresses as part of the investigation. A report will be sent to the Crown Office and the Attorney-General’s Finance Department.
“The order remains in place for the purposes of the Contempt of Court Act 1981 and the public is therefore advised to exercise caution when discussing it on social media. As the investigation is ongoing we are unable to comment further.”
