Police have named a 15-year-old girl killed in an east London fire, Tiffany Regis.
The Metropolitan Police said Tiffany died in the fire on Thursday at a block of flats in Picton. Investigators are treating the fire as arson.
While the identification was not conclusive, police said they believed Tiffany died in the fire. An autopsy found the cause of death to be smoke inhalation.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of murder. He was later released on bail pending further investigation.
Five others were wounded at the address. They have been out of the hospital since then.
Ch Sup Simon Crick, who leads the Northeast Command Unit at the Met, said his thoughts are with Tiffany, her family and friends, adding: “Incidents like this send shock waves through our communities and I don’t underestimate the impact of this in the local area and beyond.
“Officers will be on patrol in the immediate vicinity over the Easter weekend, please speak to them if you have any concerns.”
Newham Mayor Roxana Vyaz said: “Tiffany’s parents are in unimaginable pain over the loss of their beloved 15-year-old daughter who had brought so much joy. I am deeply troubled by this tragic loss of a young life, as is everyone in Newham.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Tiffany’s parents, family and friends at this incredibly difficult and heartbreaking time. I urge anyone with any information to contact the police accident room.
“Our priority is to support Tiffany’s parents who are grieving the loss of their child; and all of these young people who have lost a dear friend.”
