Two bodies have been found trapped under rubble after an apartment building collapsed in Marseille following an explosion.
Officials said they expected deaths as firefighters battled a blaze in the residential part of La Plaine.
Five people were taken to hospital and dozens of residents were taken away after the building collapsed shortly after midnight Sunday.
Rescue workers are scrambling to find at least six people who are still missing.
Earlier Sunday, before the bodies were discovered, District Attorney Dominic Lorenz told reporters that eight people were “not responding to phone calls.”
Witnesses spoke of hearing an explosion before the four-storey building on Tivoli Street collapsed and fell, and a late-night street vendor said everything shook as it happened.
“We saw people running and there was smoke everywhere,” he told AFP.
