Biden’s visit to Ireland will be of personal importance to the president, who remembered his grandfather telling him: “Joe, remember, the best drop of blood in you is Irish.”

The President will first head to County Louth, where he will tour Carlingford Castle before making the trip to Dublin.

On Thursday, he will meet with Michael Higgins, the Irish president, and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, and address the Oireachtas Homes.

He will also take part in a tree-planting ceremony and the ringing of the Peace Bell, before attending a banquet at Dublin Castle.

On Friday, the US president will make his way to County Mayo, where he has family roots.

He has previously spoken of how moved he was to walk the streets of Ballina, where his great-grandfather Edward Beloit lived before immigrating to America.

There, he will tour The Sanctuary of Our Lady Knock and visit the North Mayo Heritage and Genealogical Center’s Family History Research Unit.

He will also deliver a speech at St. Moridach’s Cathedral which is likely to be a poignant moment for the president, whose friends attest to the strength of his Irish Catholic identity.

Mr. Biden will then return to Dublin. After spending the night there, he will return to the United States.
