Sainsbury’s offers lower prices for Nectar | cardholders J Sainsbury

Sainsbury’s has begun offering lower prices on more than 300 items to members of its Nectar loyalty card scheme in a move to rival Tesco’s Clubcard scheme.

The Nectar price scheme offers deals when members of the supermarket loyalty program swipe their card or app at supermarkets or link to their online account, in a similar fashion to Tesco’s successful Clubcard price offer.

Those who shop using the self-scanning Smartshop system will get more personal discounts on certain items.

Deals include Nescafé Gold Blend instant coffee for £4 instead of £8.10, Heinz baked beans costing 95p instead of £1.40 and Kellogg’s Crunchy Nut cereal for £3.75 instead of £4.80. Offers will not be available at Sainsbury’s smaller local shops, concessions or petrol stations.

Members of the loyalty programme, which has been in operation for more than 20 years, can continue to accumulate points towards discount vouchers or other rewards with partner brands including Argos, Caffè Nero or British Airways.

“Nectar Prices is a new pricing offer that offers Nectar digital customers all year round access to a unique range of discounts on products handpicked for them,” the supermarket said.

The items will be marked with a Nectar Price tag that appears on the edge of the shelf in-store or next to every product online as part of the scheme, which was first reported by Sun.

Simon Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of Sainsbury’s, said: “We are delighted to launch Nectar Price, which will help millions of our customers save more on every trip to Sainsbury’s. There is much to look forward to, we will continue to update Nectar Prices and increase the variety of products on offer.”

Loyalty cards have become the focus of price battles for retailers as they try to hold on to shoppers amid massive inflation, prompting a turn to discounts including Aldi and Lidl.

Asda introduced a new loyalty scheme across all UK stores and online last summer, while Lidl launched a scheme in 2020 and updated it last year so shoppers have to spend more to get the highest level of discounts.

Waitrose brought free hot drinks to loyalty scheme members last year, in a bid to turn around slumping sales.

Last month, Tesco angered some shoppers by announcing it would slash the value of its Clubcard Rewards, as it focused more on lowering prices on shelves.

Starting June 14, shoppers will be able to double the value of their Clubcard Points – instead of tripling them as now – when they spend them with one of its rewarding partners on a restaurant meal, day trip or movie outing.
