Lampard: It will be different against Real Madrid

Chelsea face a huge task this evening as they face Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Blues travel home to the reigning European champions with faint hopes of causing an upset against Carlo Ancelotti’s impressive side. New caretaker manager Frank Lampard was unable to quickly turn Chelsea’s fortunes around during his first game in the dugout as the Blues lost 1-0 to Wolves at the weekend.

The team’s confidence is low after a difficult season that saw the loss of two managers and a drop in pace in the Premier League. Their only hope of salvation comes in the major European competitions and Chelsea must now beat Real Madrid to advance.

Ancelotti’s men are likely to lose the La Liga title to Barcelona after losing their fifth league game of the season against Villarreal on Saturday. Their main prize this season is another Champions League title, so they’ll want to do the same amount of damage to Chelsea tonight before the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

77 min: Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount are sent on to replace Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante. It’s a brave move from Frank Lampard as Chelsea can’t allow themselves to accept another goal.

As hard as it is, it’s possible to come from two goals down to advance through the second leg, but trying to overcome a three-goal deficit will need to perform a miracle.
