In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Turkey in February, the first people started moving into the tents provided by NATO on Monday (April 10, 2023). The temporary relief site in Antakya will provide housing, food and water for up to 2,400 people seeking shelter. NATO is also establishing temporary shelters in Iskenderun and Dafni for the thousands displaced by the earthquakes.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and NATO’s Supreme Commander in Europe, General Christopher Cavoli, celebrated the handover of the Antakya facility from NATO to Turkey on Wednesday (April 12, 2023). With many schools damaged in the quake-stricken provinces, the first to move in were 100 Turkish schoolchildren and their teachers. The Turkish authorities will manage the site, which will mainly function as a boarding school. The shelters, built by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, include heating, power generators and medical treatment areas.
NATO allies and partners have been supporting earthquake relief efforts in Türkiye for months. As part of a NATO airlift, allies and partners have also flown some 10,000 tents, blankets and pieces of medical equipment into Turkey. NATO also supported Turkish hospitals, including x-ray facilities. Thousands of emergency responders from across the coalition took part in the relief effort, as called for by Sweden, and partners including Japan. The earthquakes that struck Turkey earlier this year were the deadliest natural disasters on the territory of the alliance since the founding of NATO.
